    Start the new year with All-Star tournament play in Escondido. The New Years Kick Off is a Class III tournament hosted by Escondido Soccer Club, open to recreational All-Star level teams from USYSA, US Club, and AYSO.

    The New Years Kick Off is a great opportunity for recreational All-Star teams to continue competing after the regular season while giving players valuable game experience in a tournament setting.

    This tournament helps players build confidence, improve decision-making, and experience the excitement of representing their team in a competitive environment. It also gives coaches a chance to challenge their players against new opponents while continuing to focus on development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

    This event is open to boys and girls U8, U10, U12, and U14 teams. All games are played at one location, making it easy for families, coaches, and spectators to enjoy the weekend.

    Kickin’ It Challenge Tournament

    The Kickin’ It Challenge brings together competitive youth soccer teams from across San Diego County and Southern California for a weekend of meaningful competition. While the level of play is strong and the matches are competitive, the focus of the event extends beyond the results on the field. Each game is part of a larger effort to support cancer research, giving players and families the opportunity to be involved in something that has a real impact.

    The tournament is structured to provide a well-organized and positive experience, with quality fields, certified referees, and a schedule that allows teams to compete at a high level while representing a cause that matters to so many in the community.

    Power of Pink

    The Kickin’ It Challenge embraces the Power of Pink as a visible reminder of the tournament’s purpose: supporting cancer research and those affected by the disease.

    Throughout the weekend, pink is worn and displayed across the fields as a way for players, coaches, and families to show their support. For many involved, the cause is personal, and the tournament creates an opportunity to come together as a community in recognition of that.

    This element of the event helps connect the competition on the field with something more meaningful off of it, reinforcing that the weekend is about more than just soccer.

    The Power of Pink Team Awards are a unique part of the Kickin’ It Challenge, giving teams the opportunity to fully embrace the spirit of the event and show their support in a creative and visible way.

    Teams are encouraged to bring their best pink to the field — from uniforms and accessories to sideline support — and represent what the Power of Pink means to them. One boys team and one girls team will be selected based on how well they capture that energy and spirit throughout the tournament.

    To be considered, teams must check in at the designated area for a team photo by Saturday at 4:00 PM. Teams with earlier or later matches will be photographed during check-in. All photos will be shared on the tournament’s Instagram page, @KickinItChal, where the community can take part in the experience.

    Winners will be announced at 2:00 PM on Sunday at Ryan Park. Final selection will be based on overall representation as well as community engagement, including Instagram interaction.

    Selected teams will receive Power of Pink recognition and a free entry into the following year’s Kickin’ It Challenge.

    The tournament is open to boys and girls teams from U6 through U19 and welcomes a wide range of competition levels, including recreational, intermediate, and competitive teams.     DAVE SHELTON’S STORY

    Dave was a long time resident of Escondido, he served many years on the NCYSA board in many different capacities, he was instrumental in the development of all our soccer programs as well as the Mayors Cup tournament.

    He enjoyed being part of helping the youth in Escondido that he continued coaching long after his own children had grown. Dave devoted over twenty years of his life to the young soccer players of Escondido. He had a wonderful relationship with all the kids, many of whom he sponsored out of his own pocket as the need arose. He truly realized the value and purity of athletic competition in youth sports. He took great pride as well in the opportunity to coach alongside his son Josh. Josh can now be seen roaming the fields at Ryan Park and other locations as a top referee.

    In 1966 Dave and his wife Linda were recognized by California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) for their many years of volunteerism dedicated to the young soccer players in their community. They were awarded the CYSA Lifetime Honorees Award for their outstanding contributions to youth soccer in our district.

    Regrettably on October 28th 1999 Dave succumbed to cancer, and we all lost one of the “founding fathers” of youth soccer in Escondido. His name and legacy will live on forever, most of all the young soccer players that play in Escondido today will never know who Dave Shelton was, but as they grace the fields of Ryan Park, Dave will be looking down with pride, seeing what was always his pride and joy, “kids playing soccer”.

    He was a great man, and it was a pleasure to have shared so many years with him, there was not a day while we were at Kit Carson Park that we did not see Dave.

    Held each summer in North County San Diego, the Surf Summer Classic serves as an important step in preparing players and teams for the upcoming competitive season.

    The Surf Summer Classic is designed for competitive club teams looking to stay sharp during the summer months while continuing to develop both individually and as a team.

    With multiple divisions and strong competition, the tournament creates an environment where players are challenged to perform at a higher level while gaining valuable game experience.

    Teams will compete against clubs from across the region, including many that participate in the SoCal Soccer League, making this event an ideal early benchmark for the fall season.
